Astronauts celebrate Christmas in Space

Holiday is a time when we spend some quality time with our family and loved ones. And when it’s Christmas Holidays, then it’s a must tradition to be with family.

It’s pronounced to feel lonely and sad when you are away from your home for holidays, but it’s too hard when you are not on the Earth surface at all. It’s all about wandering around somewhere in the space, driving, and diving through all the orbits and stars.

On 23rd December 2018, a NASA astronaut named Anne McClain took Twitter to express her feelings about” away-from-home-for-holiday” just before Christmas. She also shared an amazing view of the Earth and moon which she took from space with a lovely message saying,” This holiday season, I find myself looking down at ‘home’ a lot. We are all on this fantastic, beautiful planet together – it indeed is a small world. And when I watched the moon set over the horizon today, I once again found myself without words.”

On 25th December 1968 – during the Apollo 8 moon mission, NASA astronauts Frank Borman, Jim Lovell, and Bill Anders completed their historic first flight around the moon and had just started their journey back to the Earth. The night they left was the Christmas Eve. Astronaut Anders had clicked the most amazing Earth-rise photo which showed the planet Earth peeking over the lunar horizon.

After so many years yet another crew of three is spending the Christmas holiday up in the space. They are all living and working on board over the International Space Station. Their names are Anne McClain, David Saint-Jacques from the Canadian Space Agency, and Russian cosmonaut Oleg Kononenko.

On December 8th, 2018 – the astronauts were sent some holiday treats so that they could feel at home and enjoy their time in space. These holiday treats were carried to the space station by the SpaceX Dragon CRS-16 cargo spacecraft.

The dinner menu was a traditional holiday bunch with smoked turkey, candied yams, corn, green beans, mac and cheese, and potatoes au gratin. For dessert, they had strawberries, bread pudding, butter cookies, and shortbread cookies all served with different colored icing packs for their decoration.
